Abstract

1,219,099. Casting machines; making electrodes. A. DUNLOP. 21 May, 1968 [20 Dec., 1967], No. 57870/67. Headings B3A and B3F. [Also in Divisions F4 and H5] Casting machines.-Titanium scrap 13 in a hopper 12 is introduced into a hearth 16 by a conveyer 14 and a shoot 15. Metal melting is effected in the hearth by a plasma torch or an electron gun 17. The molten metal flows into one of a series of bottomless ingot moulds 19 mounted on a turntable 18 and a fixed plate 20. The plate 20 has a hole 21 through which the cooled ingots 23 fall into a water-cooled chamber 22. A mechanical ingot ejector may be used. The whole assembly is contained within a housing 10 which is evacuated or filled with an inert gas. The moulds 19 are of a D-shaped cross section. Making electrodes.-The D-shaped ingots 23, formed as above indicated, are welded in a staggered manner by their flat faces to form a cylindrical electrode 24 (see Fig. 2) for remelting in a vacuum arc furnace. Alloying elements may be included between the ingots 23 of the electrode 24.
