Abstract

984,428. Casting processes. W. C. HERAEUS G.m.b.H. June 26, 1961 [June 25, 1960], No. 23109/61. Heading B3F. Metal, particularly high melting point metals such a niobium, molybdenum, tantalum, tungsten, titanium, zirconium, and steel are melted in a cooled melting crucible in a vacuum by means of direct bombardment by an electron beam or beams and is cast from the crucible into one or more iron chills or casting moulds, the charge being further heated in vacuo during the casting. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the metal is melted in a tipping crucible 1 by a number of electron beams from guns 8a-8c, and further heat is supplied during casting by guns 8d and 8e. In a modification, Fig. 2, the melt flows from a bottom pour crucible 1, the pour hole being initially closed by the pieces of material 6 to be melted, or by means of a plug of the same material. An intensified power to melt the closure is supplied by switching on the electron gun 12b. An annular cathode 13 heats the cast metal. The moulds and crucible may be arranged in the same vacuum chamber or the moulds may be in a separately evacuable chamber.
