Abstract

980,242. Casting in a vacuum. TEMESCAL METALLURGICAL CORPORATION. Aug. 27, 1963 [Sept. 6, 1962], No. 33907/63. Heading B3F. [Also in Division H1] Casting high melting point metals in a vacuum is effected by heating means in the form of an electron gun 14 mounted on a tiltable crucible 11 within a vacuum chamber 16. The gun heats a block of metal within the crucible 11, forming a molten pool thereon, which is then tilted by hydraulic means 23 to discharge the molten pool into a mould 44. The unmelted metal around the pool serves as a consumable crucible and as a supply of more molten metal. Both the crucible 11 and mould 44 are proxided with cooling means. In an alternative embodiment the electron gun 14 may also be directed on to the metal in the mould to effect controlled cooling, or, two electron guns may be used, both tiltable with the crucible being directed to the metal in the crucible and mould respectively.
