Abstract

564,824. Electric heating. JARROW METAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., and BIRD, F. G. April 9, 1943, No. 5726. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group II] A process for melting ferrous metals and their alloys consists in feeding the finelydivided metal or alloy such as swarf, preferably chipped, into a bath of molten metal or alloy of the same analysis, the bath being protected by a layer of refining and/or reducing slag, the metal and slag being heated by electric arc and the finely-divided metal being introduced into the midst of the electrodes. The furnace 1 has adjustable arc heating means in its upper portion, a conveyer 6 leading to a charging orifice 5 for introducing the finely-divided metal into the midst of the electrodes 3, means 7 for regulating the speed of the conveyer and means 4 for regulating the heat input to the arc heating means. A bridge 1a is provided in front of the pouring lip 1b for retaining the slag 9 during pouring, so that metal 10 flows from the furnace free from slag.
