Abstract

965,426. Casting processes. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Nov. 15, 1960 [Nov. 19, 1959; Feb. 13, 1960], No. 39225/60. Heading B3F. Metals are continuously cast by melting a consumable electrode 1 in the mould 3 under a slag bath 4 by direct resistance heating by direct current, the slag composition being such that the current flowing through the slag causes its electrolytic reduction and reduction of the melt. An alternating current may be superimposed on the D.C. to give additional heating. Succeeding electrodes 10 may be joined to the preceding electrode by screw threads or by welding using an A.C. supply 13. The slag composition may be maintained by adding fresh material, deteriorated slag being removed as by overflowing or by passing a pick-up tape continuously through the pool, which may be covered with a reducing atmosphere or an insulating powder such as charcoal or graphite. In a modification, Fig. 5, slabs are cast using three electrodes 1a, 1b, 1c D.C. source 36 or A.C. source 36.
