Abstract

1,021,614. Casting-machines. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY (EURATOM). Feb. 11, 1964 [Feb. 11, 1963], No. 5735/64. Heading B3F. A process for melting and casting in the same furnace comprises arc-melting in a cooled crucible and then casting into a chill mould having its opening dipped into the melt bath, the casting being effected by establishing a gaseous pressure in the crucible higher than that in the chill mould. The mould cavity 7 is formed in the graphite electrode 6 carried by the rod 8. After vacuum arc-melting of the metal in the water-cooled crucible 3 the open end of the mould is immersed in the melt. The pressure in the enclosure is then raised by opening a valve 9b and the melt rises in the mould. By control of the pressure, the casting speed and solidification speed may be controlled so that a thin wall tube may be cast in a core-less mould. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the mould is formed as a replaceable insert in a permanent electrode. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the mould is formed as a hollow wall cylinder concentric with the electrode 16, which may be consumable and longitudinally displaceable with respect thereto. There may be a number of cavities 15a, Fig. 4 (not shown), or a single annular space for casting pipes.
