Abstract

1,063,543. Casting - machines; moulds. AMERICAN RADIATOR & STANDARD SANITARY CORPORATION. July 1, 1965 [July 2, 1964], No. 28019/65. Heading B3F. Iron articles (such as baths and sinks) are cast by raising a quantity of molten iron through a heated tube (6), Fig. 1 (not shown) from a closed furnace (14) into a female drag (5), by raising the pressure of a gas such as N, Ar, He, Cl or CO 2 in the furnace; a male cope (3) may already be in the closed position (4) or it may be slowly closed down into that position from a location just above the level (1) of metal in the drag, being already at that location or lowered quickly to it from a high position (2) reached upon completion of a previous cycle. Before removing the cope from the drag, the furnace pressure is lowered to its previous value. The mould parts (3, 5) are pre-heated, insulated and cooled by passing steam, air and water respectively through passages (13). The cope is moved by an hydraulic piston controlled by an electric circuit, Figs. 2A, 2B (not shown). The casting may be ejected by pins or removed by a vacuum holder. Mould-lining materials.-The die may be coated with lampblack or with a coating comprising a highly conductive and ductile material as a base layer, a refractory metal oxide and a plasma-sprayed overlayer of refractory oxide.
