Abstract

1,238,919. Gravity die casting. COPAL FOUNDRIES Ltd. 16 Jan., 1970 [20 Oct., 1968], No. 39667/68. Heading B3F. A gravity die-casting apparatus comprises a die 7, means (10) for heating the die, means for applying a cover 4 over the or each feed point of the die, means for introducing air into the cover 4 and means for opening the die. The cover 4 may be moved into position by a piston- and-cylinder unit and an asbestos gasket 6 forms a seal between it and the surface of the die. Before the molten metal is poured into the cavity 9 the die is heated to a temperature at least 30‹ C. above the normal working temperature of the die, e.g. to between 350‹ and 500‹ C., when aluminium or its alloys are being cast. A pressure, e.g. of 5 to 25 p.s.i., is applied to the metal during its solidification by means of compressed air supplied through a pipe 1. A baffle-plate 5 prevents direct impingement of the air supply on the molten metal surface and a relief valve 3 prevents the pressure from rising above a predetermined value. The compressed air may be preheated, and the sequence of operations effected automatically.
