Abstract
1,267,982. Pressure casting machines. NATIONAL LEAD CO. 16 July, 1969 [25 July, 1968], No. 35937/69. Heading B3F. Ferrous alloys are cast using a cold-chamber pressure die-casting machine in which the shotchamber has an upper melt receiving portion 31, of greater diameter than a shot-plunger containing portion below. The upper portion 31 is provided with a protective lining of an asbestos paper heat-insulating cup 36 before each casting operation. Alternatively to provide the protective lining the walls of the portion 31 are sprayed with an aqueous slurry of silica flour and bentonite. The shot plunger 25 is protected by a disposable seal cap 32 or a metal tube (35) with a carbon cap (54). In operation, an upper die 18 is brought down upon a lower die 13 and clamped by toggles (not shown). To fill the die cavity the shot plunger is forced into the molten metal thereby leaving an annulus of metal around the shot plunger (see Fig. 5). To eject the casting, the dies are opened and the shot plunger further advanced and retracted leaving the casting holding to the upper die; then the ejector rods 51 are actuated. The biscuit is removed from the shot plunger which is refurbished with a new seal while the portion 31 is sprayed or provided with a new cup 36 for the next casting operation.
