Abstract

985,153. Pressure casting. A. MADWED. May 30, 1963 [May 31, 1962], No. 21652/63. Heading B3F. In a die-casting process metal is prevented from freezing in the nozzle or dripping on to the die faces after a casting operation by effecting a controlled two-stage return movement of the plunger 15. The plunger makes a rapid partial return, with the dies 19 and 27 closed, to a position shown at a-a, which maintains the closure of the fill port 14a and produces a suction in the gooseneck. This draws the molten metal from the nozzle 17 as shown in Fig. 3. After a further timed interval the dies are opened, the plunger is completely retracted, uncovering the fill port thus permitting the level of the metal in the gooseneck to rise to the level in the pot, ready for the next injection phase of the casting operation. The plunger and movable die are hydraulically actuated and a circuit diagram is shown.
