Abstract

1,125,168. Treating molten iron. HUMPHREYS & GLASGOW Ltd. May 26, 1967 [July 8, 1966], No.30845/66. Heading C7D. In a process and apparatus for the treatment of molten iron with magnesium or a magnesium alloy the latter is supported in a refractory container upon a plug closing the lower end of the container, the other end thereof being provided with means for expelling the magnesium by means of pressure, while the whole apparatus may be so located that the lower end of the container is immersed below the surface of the iron while the magnesium is discharged. In the particular embodiment shown in Fig. 1, magnesium rod 7 is supported on plug 10 in tube 1; by means of rack and pinion arrangement 5 the tube 1 is lowered, and the magnesium ejected by piston 2 actuated by hydraulic pressure in cylinder 3. The container 1 is then rapidly raised, and may be moved away by rotation of pillar 6. The piston may be protected by a refractory plug interposed between it and the magnesium rod.
