Abstract

1,233,967. Casting machines. MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON Ltd. 18 Feb., 1970 [25 Feb., 1969], No. 9944/69. Heading B3F. Die casting apparatus comprises a crucible for the molten metal, means for introducing gas into the crucible at a pressure above atmospheric and a pipe 3 having at least its lower end in the crucible and up which molten metal is to be forced to a die, said pipe having a non-return valve 10, 11 to prevent return of the metal down the pipe. The valve may consist of a ball 1] resting on a seating 10. A filter 14 may be provided at the entrance to the pipe 3 and is held in place by spring fingers 17 welded to the pipe at 18. When casting magnesium alloys the seat 10 may be made of cast iron and the ball 11 of chrome steel; when casting aluminium alloys the ball and seating may be from bonded zirconium oxide or titanium diboride. One or more narrow passageways (20) may be provided in the nozzle (4) or base of the die to allow the introduction of SO 2 .
