L'invention sera. décrite ci-après de façon plus détaillée, on ae référant aux dessine ci-annexés, lesquels sont fournis à titre purement illustratif et dans lesquels;

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

<Desc/Clms Page number 15>

Injection molding method and apparatus
The present invention relates to injection molding methods and apparatus, and more particularly to the improvements which are made in injection molding and whereby it is possible to avoid the problems which arise from the solidification of molten metal.
in the injection nozzle and / where the flow of liquid metal on the closing faces of the mold *

molten metal,
The molten metal comes from a reserve opening carried by the machine and is injected into the cavity which is delimited when the movable shell is brought to cooperate with the fixed shell, the metal being injected by the action of a plunger or piston which pushes back the liquid metal through a swan neck channel and a nozzle which had placed at the end of this oanal and which opened into the mold cavity.
The metal is supplied to the oanal in the throat of the swell from a heated tank by a filling port which is closed by the piston when the latter begins to lower., After the piston has pushed the metal back into the tank. the mold cavity through the gooseneck and the nozzle, the piston starts its return stroke in the direction of its recharge position which creates a vacuum between the metal which remains in the gooseneck and the solidified metal which fills the mold cavity.
As soon as the filling orifice of the gooseneck channel is opened, the atmospheric pressure exerted on the liquid metal in the reserve bag pushes the molten metal back into the gooseneck to fill it as well as the nozzle until it re-establishes contact with the metal occupying the mold cavity. After the piston returns to its extreme top position, the% ro shells are brought together for a predetermined period of time to allow cooling of the cast pieoo. After this time, the shells separate and the cast is removed from the nozzle.
At this moment, the liquid metal which is found in the nozzle and in the swirl neck tends to flow back towards the ope, at hydrostatic equilibrium with the metal contained therein, When the shells are totally separated , the molded part is ejected using release pins and a new

casting oyol can start,
It has been found for some time that despite the fact that these automatic injection molding machines are fast and efficient, which has won them wide commercial successes,
they pose a delicate problem mainly due to the fact that the molten metal contained in the oon neck returns to the nozzle on oontaot with the molded part after returning the piston to the filling position, given the presence of a vacuum in the throat de oygne and opening the fill lumen. In most molds, artificial cooling is applied to the part of the molded part which forms the weight and which is in direct communication with the nozzle. This cooling of the flyweight is a great cause of difficulty, as molten metal is in the nozzle and gooseneck during most of the cooling period of the casting.
If the artificial cooling is too intense, the weight becomes integral with the metuloontonu in the nozzle and the ground part remains attached to the fixed shell after opening the mold. If the cooling is insufficient, the molded piboe is not sufficiently hardened and the tip of the monkfish roates in a semi-molten state and remains hooked in the fixed shell when the mold is opened, the remainder of the cast being removed with the movable shell.
In either case, casting should be stopped until the flyweight and nozzle can be released.
Conversely, have the cooling is almost perfect, by the time. moves away from the movable shell and where the mass-burbot separates from the molten metal occupying the nozzle, there is very often a flow of metal from the end of the weight when moving the nozzle.

mobile shell, metal which settles had! the closing face of the movable shell and solidifies, which prevents the mold from completely closing during the next molding operation. A certain quantity of liquid metal may flow from the nozzle to the part of the fixed shell corresponding to the weight, and come to trickle down onto the closing face of said shell, which again prevents the complete closure of the shell. mold when the shells are brought together for the next molding operation.
It is almost impossible to obtain a perfect cooling to 100 f in the part of the mold corresponding to the flyweight, since this cooling depends on the temperature of the molten metal, the temperature of the mold, the temperature of the heating agent. cooling, room temperature, pace of operations and many other variables. Consequently, we are generally resigned to compromises in the usual injection molding machines, and we always encounter some problems with the obstruction of the nozzle section or with the liquid metal streaming on the faces. for closing the shells.
Due to the significant problems and drawbacks that result from liquid metal trickling onto the closing faces of the shells, many injection molding machines are fitted with brushes which automatically sweep the closing faces of the shells afterwards. ejection of each molded part.
However, these brushes are not completely effective and it is necessary to constantly monitor their operation. In addition, the time required for this brushing increases the duration of each molding operation and appreciably reduces the number of molded parts likely to be

performed in the united time,
The invention therefore relates to an automatic injection molding machine, in which the liquid metal contained in the throat and in the nozzle is separated from the weight of the molding during the greater part of the cooling period, oe which avoids the drawbacks that result from contact between the liquid metal and the weight,
namely the plugging of the nozzle and / or the liquid metal lemiss @ llement on the formoture faces of the shells,
The invention has the advantage of allowing the elimination of cleaning brushes and the like, and thus of bringing about an improvement in the efficiency of the machine, in other words an increased production of ground parts in the processing unit. time.
The invention also has the advantage of making the problem of cooling or solidifying the ground part much less oritic than in conventional injection molding machines, given the absence of molten metal in the nozzle and the upper part of the neck of oygne laying the cooling or solidification fraction of the molding cycle.
This results in the additional advantage of avoiding frequent stoppages of the machine and the need to clean the nozzle,
The invention will be. described in more detail below, with reference to the accompanying drawings, which are provided for illustrative purposes only and in which;

FIG. 5 is a schematic view of the mechanism of an automatic injection molding machine according to a particular embodiment of the invention,
As shown in the drawings, the injection molding machine comprises an oven 1 with a heating chamber 2 and an opening 3 for the entry of a gas flame or other heating system.
In the heating chamber there is placed a vessel 4 for the purpose of maintaining the casting metal 5 in a molten state. Although this is not an essential aspect from the point of view of the present invention, it is preferable that the work is subdivided by a partition 6 into two compartments A and B, as shown in the figures, the level of the molten metal in the compartment A being kept constant by a tapping spoon 7, which can pivot on an axis 8, and which cooperates in ooulissement by means of a pin 9 with a slot 10 carried by a rod 11, which is fixed by nuts 13 on the frame 12 of the movable shell.
Any excess molten metal introduced in excess into compartment A by the spoon, returns to compartment B by pouring over partition 6.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Inside Compartment A of the reserve opening 4, there is the metal injection mechanism 14, with a cylinder 15, a swan neck 16, which this provided & its upper part with a nozzle 17, which and in communication with the flyweight orifice 18 of the shell 19, itself fixed on the frame 20 of the machine.
The piston 21 can slide in the inaction cylinder 15 and it is extended by an upper cylinder 22 which is carried by the frame of the machine. The cylinder 15 is provided with a filling port 14a which communicates with the compartment A so that the liquid metal can flow inside the cylinder 15 when the piston 21 is in the extreme high position.
The piston rod 21 carries at its upper part a pedestrian 23 which can exert, inside the piston 22, a back and forth movement under the action of the oil pressure alternately introduced and discharged by the pipes 24. and 24a, which are connected to the distribution valve 26 shown on the acharna, of FIG. 5.
When the piston is lowered by the application of hydraulic pressure in the pipe 24 and thanks to the evacuation of the oil through the pipe 24a, said piston 21 first closes its filling port 14a, then pushed back the liquid metal from the cylinder 15 through the gooseneck 16, then through the nozzle 17, inside the mold cavity, as shown in Figure 2. This maneuver occurs only when the shells constituting the August mold in contact with each other.
The movable shell 27 is shown on the shell support 12, to which is attached a rod 28 which carries to

its other end is a piston 29 slidably mounted inside the cylinder 30 as shown in Figure 5.
The movable shell 27 is moved in the direction of the fixed shell 19 and clamped in contact therewith by the hydraulic pressure exerted in the cylinder 30 and pushing back the rod 28 and the shell support * The shell support and the shell mobile are kept in perfect alignment with the fixed shell by means of rods 31 on which the shell support can slide by means of sleeves 32.
The movable shell 27 cooperates with the ejection plate 33 which carries demoulding pins 34 and which is connected to the ejection ties 35. When the movable shell is in contact with the fixed shell, the ejection plate is in the position shown in Figures 2 to 4 and the demoulding hooks are brought back to the tiller so that allas are flush with the surface of the movable shell.
when the molding operation is completed and the movable shell is brought back to the position shown in FIG. 4, the ejection rods come into contact with an ejection stop appearing at 39 in FIG. 1, of where it resulted that the springs 36 are compressed, that their release brochas come to bear on the ground part 5a, and release it from the core 37 of the mobile shell,
FIG. 1 also shows an auxiliary molten metal feed tank 40, which is provided with a suitable heating system and which makes it possible to feed liquid metal,
as and when required, the compartment B of the main tank 4, by means of a mechanically operated spoon, which is articulated on a fixed arm 42 and on a movable arm 43 which is actuated by a piston

The automatic injection molding machine according to the invention has an operation which is similar to that of previously known machines, jump to a point. It is at the point that each molding cycle begins when the shells are separated from one another. 'other, at. weft said when the mold is open and the inaction piston is in the upper position shown in figure 1.
In the or usual injection molding machines, during the first phase of the molding operation, the shells are brought together and the piston is lowered to fill the mold cavity, As soon as the liquid metal contained in the mold especially in the casting jets and / or parts of the weight has or time to solidify, which requires about a second for small parts, the piston returns to its extreme high position for which the filling port is open for roator in this position during the second phase of cooling and solidification,
phase whose duration depends on the size and thickness of the parts and extends over four or five seconds in the case of small parts; during this time, the metal can solidify completely in the main cavity of the mold * It is at the start of the second cooling and solidification phase that the operation of the device according to the invention differs essentially from that of the devices previously known, According to the present invention, the piston does not have ramona in its extreme high position for which the filling lumibre is open, but it remains in an intermediate position,
keeping the fill lumber closed until the second phase of the molding operation is complete and the shells. are open.

the piston in the intermediate position a-a visible in Figures 3 and 4.
This represents the most characteristic aspect of the device according to the invention, given that at this moment of the molding cycle, the mold cavity has been filled with molten metal and the return of the piston has created a vacuum in the neck. swan 16 of the injection mechanism, with the result that the excess liquid metal was drained from the nozzle 17 and the upper part of the swan neck.
Since the piston is locked in position aa inside cylinder 15, so this is shown by Figures 3 and 4, the filler port 14a, in the wall of the injection cylinder, remains closed and the atmospheric pressure being exerted on the molten mitai in the compartment A of the tank 4, cannot cancel the vacuum reigning in the gooseneck where it happened in the molding machines of the usual type
After a given period has elapsed, for the cooling and solidification of the molded part, ie a few seconds at least,
the programmer 47 again actuates the distribution valve 48 and the movable shell 27 separates from the stationary shell 19. The casting solidified 5a route fixed to the core 37 of the movable shell as shown in figure 4.
When the movable shell rotates back, it activates the switch 55 which opens the blocking valve 54 again and allows the oil to escape again through the aortic line 24 so that the piston can complete its return stroke. and come into the position which it occupies in figure 1 and which is shown by the interrupted trace in figure 4, by opening the filling port 14a, so that molten metal can flow to its destination. of the injection mechanism

in order to compensate for the quantity used during the molding operation.
As shown in Figure 1, the open. The opening of the filling lumen 14a allows the metal to flow into the injection mechanism and to fill the gooseneck to the level corresponding to the level reached in compartment A in figure 1.
It is rational that the level of the liquid metal in the gooseneck is high and as close as possible to the nozzle opening, in order to reduce the amount of air which is in the gooseneck and in the nozzle, since excessive amounts of air which are injected into the mold cavity laying the molding core results in poor quality molded parts affected by blisters and surface defects. The liquid metal level is maintained by the automatically operating spoon which is shown in the figures.
As shown in Figure 1, the level of liquid metal in the gooseneck corresponds to the level of liquid metal in compartment A of the tank, this level being determined by the height of the oloison 6 which separates compartments A and B .
Providing that the movable shell 27 and its support 12 continue their backward movement, the spoon 7, which was immersed in the lower position in the liquid metal contained in compartment B in the manner indicated by the traoé in phantom in the figure 1 and in solid lines in Figure 2, pivots on its axis 8, so that it swung and the liquid metal can flow into compartment A to replace? the liquid metal that was used during the molding.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
At the same time, the ejection tires 35 which are fixed to the ejection plate 33, come up against the ejection stop 39, as shown in FIG. 1, and it follows that the roasorts 36 are crushed and that the brochas 34 release molds engage inside the movable shell 27 and release the molded part from the core 37.
The ground part 5a falls onto the lane 44 and operates the switch 46 which starts a new molding cycle. It should be noted that the invention is not limited to the aspects specifically described and illustrated above. , and that many variants are possible without departing from the scope of the invention, The essential aspect of the invention resided in an injection molding machine, equipped with such an aorta that a vacuum is opened in the neck. swan of the liquid metal injection system,
this vacuum being retained after the shells have been separated and the molded part has been withdrawn from the housing of the monkfish mass in the fixed shell.
Marne if this vacuum can be maintained by other means, for example by providing the filling port with a valve which would only be opened when the shells are not in contact with each other, or by controlling the valve. withdrawal of the piston so that it operates at reduced speed, which would allow the molded part to be completely solidified and the contact faces of the shells separated before the instant when the piston reaches the fill port, it is preferred , in order to increase the efficiency of the machine, to provide the piston with a blocking valve of the kind shown in the attached drawing,
valve through which the piston quickly returns to position a-a and is held in this

of a R0paror before returning to the extreme high position.
In the usual type of injection molding machines a vacuum appears n6o.asairament in the inaction system when the piston returns. However, the return of the piston is instantaneous and complete and the vacuum is instantly destroyed once the piston reaches the lumen.

In most cases, this metal falls on the closing face of the mobile shell where it solidifies which prevents perfect contact with the face of the fixed shell during the next mussel shell * On the other hand, if the cooling is too intense, the liquid metal contained in

the tip of the mageolotte will be able to S8 CadOOe and remain in place at the time of demolding The machine must then be stopped and the solid metal contained in
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
the opening of the flyweight and the nozzle before one can proceed to the next molding cycle.
These problems, which arise with habitas linked injection molding machines, are completely overcome by the method and device according to the invention, since the vacuum in the gooseneck is kept intact until after the solidification of the casting and separation of the shells.
There is no molten metal in or near the nozzle which could solidify or trickle into the opening of the masaelotte and it turned out that the extreme tip of the masaelotte which remained in contact with the hot nozzle and which therefore did not solidify, is sucked through the nozzle by the vacuum in the swan neck, with the result that the casting presented a slight oreux at the point where would normally find the tip of the flyweight.
It is therefore sufficient to periodically examine the molded parts in order to be able to check the correct functioning of the machine quickly and with precision. The absence of liquid metal in the nozzle and the top of the gooseneck during cooling and solidification of the molded part makes the cooling step much less difficult than in the case of conventional machines. Mine if the cooling is insufficient, the metal remaining liquid at the end of the m @ sselotte will return to the nozzle and will not be able to run off on the contact faces of the shells * Conversely, an exaggerated cooling does not raise any problems. ,
since the nozzle and the upper part of the throat do not contain any liquid metal liable to solidify.
