Abstract
1,231,867. Casting ingots. SUMITOMO METAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 2 Aug., 1968 [4 Aug., 1967], No. 36900/68. Heading B3F. In a method of bottom casting metal ingots, the moulds 9 are closed off from the runners after pouring and the molten metal drained from the runners. The apparatus comprises at least one mould 9 on a table 10 slidably mounted on a stationary table 7, a runner 14, a refractory insert 12 in the sliding table 10, said insert having a passage 11 co-operable with the runner outlet, means 24 for displacing the sliding table 10 to cause the insert 12 to close the runner outlet, and a molten metal discharge port 19 closable by a stopper 22. As soon as the mould has been filled, the pusher 24 moves the table 10 and thus the moulds 9 to the right to close the runner outlet and open the discharge port 19. This movement may be initiated automatically as soon as the molten metal reaches contacts 27. In an embodiment, Fig. 8, a number of moulds 9 are positioned on an annular sliding table 10 and the refractory material defining the runners is located in a box-like structure 33 located below the stationary table 7. The runners may be formed by first assembling a series of polyvinyl pipes, then building up or pouring in unshaped refractory material and finally melting or burning away said pipes after hardening of the refractory material.
