Abstract
1,171,017. Heat treatment furnaces. OUTOKUMPU OY. 13 July, 1967 [13 July, 1966], No. 32391/67. Heading F4B. Metallurgical heat treatment apparatus, particularly suitable for the production of low carbon ferro-chromium comprises a low pressure process chamber 2 lined with insulating material 9 and containing a furnace 7 having electrical heating elements 11. Charging and discharging chambers 1 and 3 respectively are connected to the process chamber through pressure tight doors 4. A vacuum pump (12, Fig. 2, not shown), is connected to the chamber 2, similar evacuating means (not shown) being connected to the charging and discharging chambers. In operation a charge 5 enters the charging chamber 1 which is then evacuated to a pressure corresponding to that of chamber 2 and is carried through the furnace by a roller type conveyer 6 to exit through discharging chamber 3. A water-cooling arrangement 10, together with a suitable inert gas, is provided within the chamber 3 for cooling the charge leaving the process chamber 2; alternatively, if required, the charge may be vacuum melted in a vacuum chamber (not shown). The chamber 2 may be subdivided into a number of compartments, each one having a furnace 7 therein, the first one being a pre-heating furnace.
