Abstract

1331214 Continuous heat treatment furnaces ALCO STANDARD CORP 28 March 1972 [6 May 1971] 14434/72 Heading F4B [Also in Division H5] Radiant electric heating elements 29 and heat shields 30 are suspended from the cover 33 of a furnace chamber 24 which is provided with passageways in opposite end walls to enable the introduction and removal of workpieces, the cover 33, heating elements 29 and heat shields 30 being removable as a unit to permit cleaning, repair or replacement. The unit may be dipped into a cleaning solution to remove contaminants from the heating elements and heat shields. The heat shields 30 comprise a series of side by side sheets of heat reflective nickel-iron alloy which are held together by heat insulating fasteners 40 which also secure them to side plates 39 depending from the cover 33. The heating elements 29 comprise a plurality of vertically extending bars joined at their opposite ends by horizontal bus-bars 47. The chamber 24 is one of three chambers arranged end to end. Doors in the outer chambers permit the furnace to be sealed prior to evacuation. Magnesium is vaporized in the furnace to enable the workpieces to be brazed together without the use of flux. The workpieces are held on shelves in carriers 13 which are surrounded by shielding packs 17. The carriers 13 are suspended by rollers 23 from a track 61 in each chamber 24. The carriers 13 are driven by a pair of spaced dogs 70 on an endless conveyer chain 63 which is moved by a motor 71 through a gear-box 73. The carriers 13 are similar to those described in Specification 1,278,920.
