Abstract

1,001,042. Arc furnace electrodes. TITANIUM METALS CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Nov. 27, 1962, No. 44904/62. Heading H5H. A consumable electrode 10 comprises an elongated metal body having a transverse cross-section which is substantially that of a sector of a circle, and a stub 16 (Fig. 1, not shown) attached to or integral with the electrode at its top, the stub providing a support member for the electrode and being accurately positioned so that its centroid lies on a line entering through the centroid of the electrode and constituting the central longitudinal axis of the electrode. Each electrode 10 has, in section, flat sides 12 and arcuate side 14 (Fig. 2) or flat side 20 and arcuate side 22 (Fig. 4). Three electrodes as shown in Fig. 2 (for threephase operation) or two electrodes as shown in Fig. 4 (for single phase operation) may be mounted so that their arcuate sides form a circle with their flat sides spaced but parallel as shown in Fig. 5. The stubs are secured by clamps 24 to rods 26 bolted at their flanges to insulating plate 30 bolted to steel supporting plate 34 on ram 38. Ram 38 raises or lowers the electrodes in an arc furnace comprising crucible 42 containing charge 46 inside lower housing 44 and upper housing 40. Suitable metals for the electrode are listed.
