Abstract

869,461. Electric induction zone melting of semi - conductor materials. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. March 23, 1960 [May 14, 1959], No. 10360/60. Class 39(3). H.F. induction apparatus for melting a zone 4 of a rod 3 of semi-conductor material such as silicon, by a method in which the molten material is supported by means other than a supporting crucible, includes a heating coil 2 which is movable axially of the rod and has spiral turns disposed substantially in a common plane. This construction produces a more concentrated field, allows easier observation of the molten zone 4, avoids short circuiting of the turns of the coil 2 by evaporated material, reduces the danger of contamination of the rod 3 by particles scaling off from the coil, and allows easier cleaning of the coil as compared with a cylindrical construction. The coil 2 may consist of silver or silvercoated copper tubing. Tubes 11 for the supply of cooling water are soldered to copper current supply bars 10 which are connected to a device (not shown) for axially displacing the coil. The rod 3 and coil 2 may be enclosed in a vacuum chamber.
