Abstract

1,240,930. Arc furnace. LEYBOLD-HERAEUS VERWALTUNG G.m.b.H. 16 July, 1969 [3 Aug., 1968], No. 35940/69. Heading H5H. An arc furnace comprises a cover 1 carrying a consumable electrode 13 and suspended to enable it to be lowered on to a crucible 6, current being supplied to the crucible by at least two contact elements 3 which are symmetrically disposed about the electrode axis to avoid the creation of undesired magnetic fields in the vicinity of the arc, the contact elements 3 being insulatively mounted on the cover 1 to co-operate with a contact surface, e.g. flange 5 when the cover is lowered on to the crucible. The elements 3 are connected to 23 and are resiliently mounted on the cover by rubber-metal mountings 2. The crucible is suspended in cooling pot 17 provided with a baffle 27. The contact pressure is increased by allowing part of the weight of the cover to act on the crucible, by the vacuum drawn in the furnace and by clamps 7. Each clamp comprises an overcentre toggle arrangement 15, 16. The clamps may be attached to the crucible, cooling pot or preferably the elements 3.
