Abstract
797,428. Electric furnaces. VEREINIGTE ALUMINIUM-WERKE AKT.-GES. Dec. 31, 1954 [March 10, 1954], No. 37809/54. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XXXVI] An electrolytic furnace for carrying out fusion electrolysis comprises a vessel having an open top, upright conductors 1 at one end of the vessel joined to horizontal anode rails 2 extending above the vessel, cathode rails 3 extending below the vessel, the rails 2, 3 being symmetrically arranged with respect to the vessel to damp magnetic fields in the vessel, and at least one iron shield 10 between the rails 2 and the vessel for shielding the vessels from magnetic fields. Two rails 2, 3, and conductors 1 may be employed per cell. The screening may comprise a tapered iron plate 10, or a plurality of iron plates, which may be spaced by distances which increase towards the centre of the cell. The screening 10 extends about 2/3 of the length of the cell, the remainder of the cell having iron plates 11 above the rails 2. If the two rails 2 are close together a single screen 10 may serve for both. A plurality of cells may be connected in series, and in this case in addition to the screening 10, 11, screening 12, 13 close to the cell may be arranged to protect it from the upright conductors 1 which connect the rails 2 of one cell with cathode rails 3 of the preceding cell. Current is led to carbon anodes 6 from the rails 2 by leads 5, and where these are of a ferromagnetic material, they may be short-circuited by iron connecting plates, and where the rails 2 are close together the leads 5 may be interconnected by iron plates e.g. over the first 2/3 of the length of the cell. Angle or U-irons may be used for the screening 10...13, the open sector of the iron being turned outwardly of the cell. Where gascollecting aprons are employed, these may be adapted to provide good magnetic conduction. Specification 783,419 is referred to.
