Abstract

1352268 Electrolytic production of aluminium SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 31 Aug 1971 [1 Sept 1970] 40643/71 Heading C7B An electrolytic cell for the production of aluminium by electrolysis of alumina in a molten bath comprises a pot body 12 of steel; a heat and electrical insulation layer 13, having a thermal carbon lining 11; iron cathode bars 17 positioned in the bottom of the lining 11 with those parts which pass through the carbon lining side walls being surrounded by insulation material 31, and such that in any vertical cross-section taken longitudinally of the cell the ratio of iron cathode bar cross-section to carbon lining being 17:100 to 20:100; and anodes 18 dipping into the electrolyte with the gap between the outer lower edges thereof and the cell lining not exceeding 40 cm. A plurality of cells may be connected in series by connecting means as claimed in Specification No 1352269.
