Abstract
1,235,907. Vertical stud anodes for electrolysis. ALCAN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. Dec.5, 1968 [Dec.15, 1967], No.57914/68. Heading C7B. A casing (for a vertical stud anode 10 of the type in which a paste formed of a carbonaceous material and a viscous binder is supplied to the top end of the casing and becomes baked into a solid anode during its passage through the casing) comprises an outer metallic casing 14 and an inner liner 12 of metal having a higher heat conductivity than the outer casing, the liner 12 being supported in the outer casing 14 with a lower portion thereof in surface-to-surface contact with the outer casing and an upper portion out of contact with the outer casing. The outer casing 14 may be of steel and the liner 12 may be of Al, Mg, Cu, Ti or alloys thereof. Fig. 2 shows the vertical stud and anode 10 in an Al-producing electrolytic cell with a cathode 21, alumina-containing molten electrolyte 20 and molten Al 22 produced by the electrolysis. Vertical studs 18 support and supply current to the anode 10. Gases generated during the electrolysis are collected by a skirt 25 for removal to a flue. The space between the upper portion of the liner 12 and the casing 14 may be unoccupied or filled with heat insulating material such as plywood, asbestos or rock or glass wool. The casing 14 may have fins 14c and shield 14d for temperature control. The liner 12 may be of uniform thickness or may be thinner at its upper portions Fig, 5 (not shown). In another embodiment Fig. 7 (not shown) wherein a liner is of substantially rectangular section, the ends of the rectangle are of uniform thickness but are thicker than the sides of the rectangle.
