Abstract
1362933 Aluminium production cathode SCHWEIZERISCHE ALUMINIUM A G and SIGRI ELEKTROGRAPHIT GmbH 3 Feb 1972 [4 Feb 1971] 5198/72 Heading C7B [Also in Division H5] A cathode for the production of aluminium from a fused electrolyte containing alumina comprises blocks 4 of carbon, graphite or carbon bonded graphite shaped to abut closely one against the next, having parallel end surfaces of different size so that when assembled the smaller end surfaces together form one face of the cathode and the large end surfaces form an opposite face of the cathode, the blocks being grooved or slotted 9 so that a conductor bar 8 can pass through the assembled set of blocks. Rows of such cathodes may be placed at the bottom of an electrolysis tank 1. The tank which is made of steel is lined with fire-clay blocks 2. A compressable material 3 such as granular refactary or a thermoplastics bonded carbon containing composition may be placed between the blocks 4 and the tank.
