Abstract
784,660. Electrode furnaces. VEREINIGTE. ALUMINIUM-WERKE AKT.-GES. Oct. 10, 1955 [Nov. 5, 1954], No. 28849/55. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XXXVI] An electrolytic cell for producing aluminium 2 by fusion electrolysis comprises a plurality of pre-burnt continuous anodes 4 disposed side by side, each anode 4 having a width of 200 mm. to a maximum of 700 mm. and a minimum length of 1400 mm., the inter-electrode spacing being not more than 150 mm., e.g. 40 to 50 mm. Air burning in the inter-electrode spaces is prevented by a packing 6 of a tamped pulverulent substance, e.g. cryolite, alumina or soda, or a mixture thereof. Gases arising at the anodes are led under pressure to atmosphere via short passages 7 which form beneath the crust 5 of the melt 3, and lead to openings in the melt. By employing anodes of the dimensions stipulated the gases are enabled to escape by the passages 7 at a velocity high enough to take with them impurities, e.g. iron and silicon, into the atmosphere. The current load of each anode 4 is 5000 to 8000 amperes.
