Abstract
Aluminium is produced in an electrolytic furnace from a fluoride electrolyte comprising cryolite (3NaF.AlF3), AlF3 and dissolved Al2O3 maintained at a temperature between 940 and 960 DEG C., the concentration of Al2O3 in the electrolyt being maintained between 5 and 7% by weight, and the concentration of AlF3 in the electrolyte being maintained between 5 and 7% by weight above that amount which is stoichiometrically demanded for combination with NaF as cryolite. Prebaked or self-baking carbon anodes are used and current efficiency is calculated from the concentration of CO2 and CO in the anode gases. A current efficiency of 90-96% can be achieved. The electrolyte crust may be automatically broken at intervals of 1/4 -3 hours, e.g. every 1-2 hours, and alumina and aluminium fluoride supplied. At least once every 48 hours and at most twice every 24 hours an anode effect may be made to occur by allowing the concentration of alumina in the electrolyte to drop to 3-2.5% while maintaining the temperature. During the anode effect, gaseous impurities, slag and oxides are driven out of the electrolyte and a uniform Al2O3 concentration is obtained.
