Convention date, Nov. 8, 1932. Drawings to Specification. [Class 41.] In a refining process of the kind in which the anodic material consisting of an alloy of aluminium with a heavy metal such as copper, the electrolyte and the liberated aluminium form superposed molten layers with the aluminium uppermost, the electrolyte consists of a mixture of aluminium fluoride and an alkali metal, the proportion of aluminium fluoride being greater than in cryolite, to which is added an alkaline earth metal chloride, preferably barium chloride. Suitable proportions are AIF<3> 23, NaF 17 and Ba C1<2> 60 per cent, or AIF<3> 27, NaF 13 and Ba C1<2> 60 per cent. The electrolytes specified permit working at a relatively low temperature, and the use of a cell lined with magnesia bricks without a water-jacket. A carbon sole inset in the base forms the anode connection.
