Abstract

814,031. Electrolytic production of aluminium. KAISER ALUMINIUM & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Nov. 15, 1956 [Nov. 28, 1955], No. 34985/56. Class 41. A process for the electrolytic production of aluminium comprises dissolving alumina in a fused bath of electrolyte consisting essentially of from 5 to 95 per cent of one or more of potassium cryolite, potassium chloride and potassium fluoride and from 95 to 5 per cent of one or more of sodium cryolite, sodium chloride, sodium fluoride, lithium cryolite, lithium chloride and lithium fluoride and containing at least 50 per cent of cryolite and passing an electric current through the bath from an anode to a negative current conductor consisting essentially of one or more of the borides, carbides and nitrides of titanium, zirconium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum and hafnium which are resistant to molten aluminium and molten cryolite, wetted by molten aluminium and having an electrical conductivity greater than that of graphite. The negative current conductor may be of any desired shape, e.g. conductor rods, or a series of plates, or it may consist of a coating, in the bath receptacle, of the specified material. As shown, a cell comprises a steel shell 10 containing an insulating lining 11 of granular alumina within which is disposed a bath lining 12 of high alumina brick. The anode 15 is of carbon. Current conductor rods 18 of zirconium boride are sealed in the cell with a carbonaceous paste, calcium aluminate cement or frozen mixture from the bath. Upon passing the current molten aluminium rapidly forms a pool at the bottom of the bath, which pool acts as cathode and from which aluminium is withdrawn at intervals by siphoning.
