Abstract
1,270,398. Control of fused-bath aluminium electrolytic cells. KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORP. April 16, 1969 [May 24, 1968], No. 19514/69. Heading C7B. The feeding of alumina to an electrolytic reduction cell containing alumina and aluminium fluoride for the production of aluminium is controlled by a process comprising (a) obtaining measurements of the cell voltage and current at spaced time intervals, (b) periodically deriving therefrom a base resistance level for the cell, (c) periodically deriving a smoothed resistance level for the cell from a series of sequent measurements, and when the smoothed resistance level exceeds the base resistance level by more than a given amount, (d) adding a controlled amount alumina to the cell to restore the concentration in the cell to a desired value above that at which the decomposition voltage for aluminium fluoride is reached. The process may be operated automatically by computor. The cell shown comprises a steel shell 10; insulating layer 12 of alumina, bauxite, clay, aluminium silicate or brick; a lining 14 of carbon, silicon carbide or other refractory material, through which extends cathodic collector bars 30; prebaked carbon anodes 20 connected to anode busbar 28 and feed hopper 26. A computor 40 controls feeding of the cell and adjustment of the anode position. Calcium fluoride may also be present in the bath.
