Abstract

1,260,162. Automatic concentration control. KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORP. Feb. 11, 1969 [Feb.23, 1968], No. 7437/69. Heading G3R. [Also in Division C7] A measurement of alumina concentration in an alumina reduction cell is derived for control purposes from two different sets of corresponding values of cell current and voltage. In Fig. 3, a steel sheel 1, having an insulating layer 12 e.g. of alumina, bauxite, clay, aluminium silicate or brick and a lining 14 e. g. of carbon, alumina, silicon carbide or silicon nitrate, contains a pool of molten aluminium 16 and a body of molten electrolyte 18. Carbon anodes 20 dipping into the electrolyte are adjustable vertically by a pneumatic actuator 36 and cathodes 30 are inserted in lining 14. Several cells are supplied in series through a variable controller 32 which may be a rheostat, tapped transformer or saturable reactor. Under the control of a digital computer 40, controller 32 is periodically varied and values of cell resistance and back e. m. f. computed from sets of measured values of cell current and voltage. When the computed quantity indicates that the concentration is below a predetermined value means are operated to break the top crust 22 and a quantity of alumina is added by operation of a valve 24. Instead of controller 32 the current may be periodically varied by the effect of another intermittent load, e. g. a rolling mill, supplied from the same source or by allowing the concentration of each cell in turn to get very low.
