Abstract
484,014. Electrolytic production of aluminium. GARDNER, D. Dec. 4, 1936, No. 33310. [Class 41] Aluminium is produced by electrolyzing anhydrous aluminium sulphide dissolved in a fused normal anhydrous fluoride or mixture of fluorides in an atmosphere of a reducing and /or inert gas at ordinary or at a reduced pressure in substantial absence of moisture, nitrogen, and oxygen or oxygen-containing gases, for example in hydrogen or argon. The fluoride or mixture of fluorides may have a melting point of about 950‹ C., and may consist of cryolite containing if desired some sodium or potassium fluoride. The electrodes may be carbon, and the lining of the electrolysis chamber should be made of a substance not liable to evolve oxygen or oxygen-containing gases at the temperature of electrolysis, such as graphite, carborundum, petroleum coke, or zirconium or tungsten carbide. The process may be intermittent or continuous.
