Abstract

745,530. Electrolytic production of titanium. TITAN CO., Inc. Dec. 24, 1952 [Dec. 28, 1951], No. 32774/52. Class 41. A method of producing titanium metal comprises introducing titanium tetrachloride into a cell having an anode, a molten zinc cathode, and a molten electrolyte comprising at least one of the halide salts of the alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and magnesium, the tetrachloride being added in contact with the molten zinc, and concurrently passing electricity sufficient to reduce the tetrachloride to titanium metal which is solubilized or suspended in the molten zinc cathode, removing the zinc and separating the titanium metal therefrom. A heated cell 11 contains molten electrolyte 19, such as a mixture of strontium chloride or magnesium chloride with sodium chloride, an anode 18 consisting of a disc of graphite, and a molten zinc cathode 15 into which titanium tetrachloride is introduced by a conduit 20. Current is passed until 4 to 18 per cent titanium is solubilized or suspended in the molten zinc. The zinc is removed and the titanium separated by vacuum distillation or arc melting. Specification 724,198 and U.S.A. Specification 2,205,854 are referred to.
