Abstract

Sodium tetra methyl aluminium is made (Examples I to III) by (1) adding Al(CH3)2Cl or Al(CH3)3 to molten sodium under an inert atmosphere. After cooling ether is added and solid products NaCl and Al separated from the solution of NaAl (CH3)4 in ether, which is distilled under reduced pressure, (2) NaAlEt4 dissolved in benzene is mixed with Al(CH3)3 also dissolved in benzene, forming a precipitate of NaAl(CH3)4. which is stirred and then filtered off. Specification 955,252 is referred to.ALSO:Pure sodium is made electrolytically using a sodium material as anode, and as electrolyte a fused mixture of NaAlMe4 and NaAlEt4, in proportions from 1 : 3 to 3 : 1 but preferably 1 : 1. A small amount of sodium aluminium triethyl alkoxy compound, e.g. NaAl(OEt)Et3, may be added to suppress the deposition of aluminium. As cathode mercury or a copper sheet is used, and a fine glass fibre net is suspended below the cathode as described in Specification 955,252 to trap the sodium formed. Any impure sodium or sodium amalgam is used as anode. Electrolysis is effected at 120-150 DEG C. and at 1.7 V. Details are given of the preparation of the electrolyte (see Division C2).
