Abstract
860,335. Pure tantalum produced electrolytically. PECHINEY COMPAGNIE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES E ELECTROMETALLURGIQUES. May 11, 1959 [May 13, 1958], No. 16093/59. Class 41. Pure tantalum is produced by electrolysis using a molten mixture of sodium halides and sodium fluotantalate in which Ta 2 O 5 is dissolved. Any alkali metal ion other than sodium should be avoided and especially potassium. A preferred electrolyte is 85% of a eutectic mixture of NaF and NaCl, 10% of sodium tantalate and 5% of Ta 2 O 5 . Any undissolved deposit of Ta 2 O 5 is avoided. Operating conditions are 650‹ to 800‹ C., anode current density of from 60 to 120 A.S.D., and at the cathode 30 to 35 A.S.D. The tantalum produced has a Brinell hardness below 70; and after annealing at 2400‹ C., between 50 and 60.
