Abstract
482,678. Electrolytic production of magnesium. GARDNER, D. Dec. 3, 1936, No. 33167. [Class 41] Magnesium is obtained by electrolyzing anhydrous magnesium sulphide dissolved in a fused normal anhydrous fluoride or mixture of anhydrous fluorides, the melting point of which fluoride or mixture of fluorides is substantially below about 1100‹ C., preferably about 1000‹ C., in an atmosphere of a reducing and /or inert gas such as hydrogen or argon, at ordinary or reduced pressure, and in absence of moisture, nitrogen, and oxygen or oxygen-containing gases. The melt may consist of magnesium fluoride and sodium or potassium fluoride or of cryolite. The electrodes may be of carbon, and the chamber should be lined with a material such as graphite, carborundum or petroleum coke. Any magnesium sulphide present in the product may be removed by distillation, and the process may be continuous or intermittent. Specification 465,421, [Group II], is referred to.
