Abstract

813,216. Furnace electrodes. POUR L' INDUSTRIE DE L'ALUMINIUM S.A. Jan. 24, 1957 [Jan. 24, 1956], No. 2645/57. Class 39(3) A self baking continuous anode for an aluminium producing electrolytic cell is formed by periodically fixing unbaked blocks of carbonaceous material, by means of a carbonaceous cementing material, on the unbaked top of a carbonaceous selfbaking anode as the bottom of the anode is consumed. The blocks may consist of carbonaceous material containing 12 to 22 per cent of coal tar pitch as a binder. The cementing material preferably has a lower viscosity than the carbonaceous material of the blocks and may have a content of 24 to 35 per cent of coal tar pitch as a binder. As shown, a cell has an anode composed of blocks 2 of unbaked, pressed, rammed or extruded carbonaceous material, the joints 3 between them being filled with Soderberg paste as cementing material and the whole being held in a steel frame 4. Vertical contact studs 5, preferably of round section, are driven into holes constituted by two half-cylindrical grooves on abutting faces of two blocks arranged side by side (Fig 2, not shown).
