Abstract

747,775. Electrolytic cell. DOMINION TAR & CHEMICAL CO., Ltd. Sept. 8, 1953 [Sept. 9, 1952], No. 24762/53. Class 41. An electrolytic cell having a flowing mercury cathode, has an anode assembly acting as a cell cover comprising graphite blocks disposed parallel to each other with their longitudinal axes disposed at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the cell and disposed the requisite height above the cathode, narrow gaps being left between adjacent blocks for the removal of chlorine therethrough, and hoods above said gaps disposed in gas-tight relationship to adjoining blocks, the assembly being coated on the outside with a chlorine-impervious composition, and means for conducting electricity to individual anode blocks. The cell consists of an elongated trough 1 of flat U-shaped cross-section. Graphite anodes 7 are placed parallel to each other with their longitudinal axes at right angles to the longitudinal 'axis of the cell and extend to each side of the cell and are supported on strips of hard rubber 16 running the length of the cell. Between adjacent anodes is a space 8 to permit the escape of chlorine, the spaces being covered with hoods 13 supported by the anodes and having gas take-offs 14. Each anode has a groove 10 containing a copper distributer cable 9 enclosed in lead. The space between the anodes, the hoods, and the cell wall is sealed with putty 20, the joints between the hoods and the anodes is sealed with putty 21, and the upper surface of the anodes is coated with sealing material 23 such as pitch, asphalt, wax or rubber.
