Abstract

786,932. Electric furnace electrodes. VEREINIGTE ALUMINIUM - WERKE AKT.-GES. Dec. 29, 1955 [Jan. 7, 1955], No. 37325/55. Class 39(3) A continuous pre-baked anode 2 for the electrolytic production of aluminium i.e. an anode in which pre-baked replacement blocks are cemented on the top of the anode as the lower end is consumed, comprises two iron contact nipples 1 disposed on opposite sides of the anode, and the length 1a to which the nipples extend within the anode is less than 15 per cent of the extent 2a of the anode measured in the direction of the nipple axis. The nipples are removed before their temperature reaches 700‹C. and are protected from chemical attack by the anode material by a coating 4 thereon of a thickness exceeding 3 m.m. e.g. of 10 m.m. of a gas-tight compound poor in sulphur. The compound preferably comprises 60 parts of graphite, 26 parts of pitch coke of a grain side below 3 m.m. and 14 parts of molasses as a binder and has a sulphur content of under 0.5 per cent. The nipples are screwed, cast or rammed in place in the pre-baked anode sections 2, which are bonded together by a layer of cementing material 7. Members 3 support the anode and supply current.
