Abstract
786,379. Electric furnaces; electrodes. VEREINIGTE ALUMINIUM - WERKE AKT.-GES. May 13, 1955 [May 25, 1954], No. 13954/55. Class 39(3) Continuous anodes of rectangular crosssection for use in the production of aluminium by fusion electrolysis comprise prefired synthetic carbon blocks 2 of height and width at least 20 cms. and length at least 100 cms., the anodes being disposed in a row side by side with their lengths adjacent and spaced by not more than 8 cms. The dimensions stipulated ensure a heat distribution within each block 2 such that cement 5, 5a between adjacent blocks 2 of each anode is hardened sufficiently during consumption of a lower block 2 to permit current-supply and support rails 7 to be disengaged from connections 6 on the lower block 2 and attached to the next higher block 2 at 6a before the lower block approaches immersion in the electrolyte 3.
