Abstract

760,623. Glazes. KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. April 26, 1954 [April 30, 1953], No. 12031/54. Class 56 [Also in Group XI] A carbonaceous body readily oxidizable at high temperature e.g. an amorphous carbon or graphite electrode for a smelting furnace or for an electrolytic cell has an adherent glaze coating of boric oxide. The coating is continuous and heated to form the glaze and may contain 2 per cent of methylcellulose, small amounts of wetting agent, a binding agent such as gum arabic or starch, carbides such as silicon carbide, alumina or magnesium oxide and 5 per cent of boron phosphate, silica and calcium fluoride. The coating is applied as a solution or slurry of boric oxide or boric acid or mixtures thereof in water, or butanol and the coated carbon is dried at 60‹ to 105‹C. and then heated to 600‹ to 1000‹C. to form the glaze or the boric oxide or acid may be dusted as a powder on a'heated carbon article and then heated to 500‹ to 1200‹C. to form the glaze.
