Abstract

793,359. Crayons. ZGRAGGEN. R. July 18, 1955 [Aug. 4, 1954], No. 22654/54.. Class 146(3) Crayons for decorating ceramic objects. and which are free from graphite, lamp black and wax, consist of a fired mixture of at least one metal compound, at least one inorganic carrier, and a binder therefor; after firing a ceramic article marked therewith, a coloured residue is left on the article surface. The metal compound may be a salt or salts of heavy metals such as chromium, cobalt, copper, antimony, iron nickel, tin or lead; the carrier may be clay, alumina, aluminium silicate, kaolin, infusorial earth (kieselguhr), white bole, silica. zinc oxide, metastannic acid, calcium phosphate, calcium stannate, feldspar or fireclay; these are converted to a paste by means of a liquid or liquefiable binder such as water, glycerine, starch gum, tragacanth jelly, glucose solutions, gum arabic, synthetic resin emulsions, casein solutions or animal glue; the paste is pressed into thin leads (e.g. 4 mm. diameter) in forms, allowed to dry, and then fired at 400-1000‹C. Ceramic objects after decoration therewith are preferably glazed, and then fired at 750-1300‹C. A suitable paste for red crayon is: (1) 8 parts by weight of a mass made by adding a hot saturated solution of potassium chormate 6 and borax 8 (pts.), to calcined stannic oxide 100, calcium carbonate 50, powdered quartz 36 (pts.), homogenizing, passing through a roller mill, airdrying, finely grinding, and oxidizing in a hot air current; (2) 2 parts of kieselguhr; (3) 1 part of a 10 per cent gum arabic solution, extra water being added if necessary. Constituents for other colours are also given.
