Abstract
A refractory article resistant to oxidation comprises silicon carbide and a bond containing a barium compound. The barium may be introduced as carbonate, nitrate, chloride, sulphate or silicofluoride. Small amounts of clay, feldspar or other substances may be incorporated with the barium compound. The article may contain 80-92 per cent silicon carbide, 0-2 per cent Fe2O3, 0.01-2 per cent Al2O3 and 0.5-8 per cent BaO, the minor constituents forming with the silicon carbide a glaze which is resistant to oxidation. In an example, a standard size refractory brick is made by mixing 93 parts of silicon carbide grains, 7 parts of finely-powdered silicon carbide, 3 parts of barium carbonate and 3 parts of dry lignone, incorporating sufficient water to bring the mixture to pressing consistency, moulding under pressure the mixture so obtained, drying at 220 DEG F. and firing in a kiln at 1450 DEG C.
