Abstract
A heat-cast refractory, particularly for use in contact with molten magnesium is formed of crystalline zirconia and magnesium spinel in an amorphous matrix, the zirconia constituting 10-60 per cent of the composition. The composition may also contain crystalline corundum and not more than 10 per cent of silica. The composition preferably contains 10-60 per cent. zirconia 7-25 per cent of magnesia, and 30-80 per cent of alumina, the silica and other impurities in the raw materials forming the matrix. Baddeleyite may be used as the source of zirconia. Small amounts of potassium or sodium oxide may be included in order to prevent cracking of castings containing only small amounts of silica.
