Abstract

A heat-cast refractory for use in resisting attack by chemical fluxes such as molten glass, and comprising zirconia, chromic oxide, alumina, and iron oxide, has the amount of silica restricted to less than 4 per cent, and the mols of iron oxide less than the sum of the mols of chromic oxide and alumina. The iron oxide forms spinels with the chromic oxide and alumina, and the mass is constituted by crystals of zirconia and solid solutions of ferrous chromite, ferrous aluminate, and chromic oxide-alumina. In order to avoid the inclusion of detrimental impurities, chrome green oxide is used as the source of the chromic oxide. Specifications 265,847, [Class 22], 542,550 and 545,949 are referred to.
