Abstract
A mullite porcelain is produced by calcining a mixture containing by weight 70% to 80% mullite grog, 20% to 30% ball clay and 0 to 10% kaolin; the mullite grog is 95% crystalline mullite containing 75% Al2O3 and 25% SiO2, the ball clay containing 28% to 31% Al2O3 and 53% to 56% SiO2 with less than 20% free SiO2 and a Seger Cone equivalent of 32 to 34, while the kaolin contains 36% to 38% Al2O3 and 46% to 48% SiO2 with less than 5% free SiO2 and a Seger Cone equivalent of 35 to 36. The mullite grog which may contain 2% corundum and 3% glass is formed by calcining a mixture of low alkali content Al2O3 and kaolin clay between 3245 DEG F. and 3326 DEG F. The ground mixture is cast, pressed or extruded, and for casting the ball clay should contain less than 10% illite and the kaolin should have 93% of its particles finer than 10 micron.
