Abstract

High grade acid clay is formed from a mixture of low grade clay with 5% to 50% of fine quartz sand with a grain size below 0,3 mm, the sand being obtained from the washing of kaolin in hydrocyclone separators. The quartz sand contains 92% SiO2 and 5,5% Al2O3 and the clay raw material may be natural clay, semi-acid clay, china clay and kaolin. Examples of the high grade clay produced are 90% kaolinite, 9% quartz and 1% feldspar, or 74% kaolinite, 25% quartz and 1% feldspar.
