Abstract

An aluminous ceramic composition comprises calcined alumina, orgillaceous and kaolinic substances and a fluxing material containing a mixture of TiO2 and MnO2. A preferred composition comprises 15-45% Al2O3, 30-60% argillaceous and kaolinic substances, and less than 20% flux, e.g. sybritic nepheline and feldspar containing 0.5-4% (based on the ceramic composition) of a 1:2 mixture of TiO2 and MnO2, by wt. The weight ratio of argillaceous substances to kaolinic substances is preferably less than 1. The mole ratio Al2O3: all other components except SiO2 is from 6 to 9: 1, and the mole ratio SiO2: all other components except Al2O3 is from 7 to 9:1.
