Abstract

A densely vitrified cordierite containing ceramic composition comprises, in per cent., 5-15 of lithium aluminium silicate minerals e.g. petalite and/or spedumene, which act as fluxes; 10-40 of magnesium compounds e.g. talc, elivine, magnesite or their mixtures; 30-55 of plastifying aluminium silicates e.g. clays; 0-20 of zircoium silicate; 0-5 of iron oxide, manganese oxide in mixtures thereof; and 0-20 of substances containing aluminium oxide but which do not liberate a free crystalline form of silica below 1450 DEG C., such as alumina, bauxite, corundum, sillimanite or their mixtures.
