Abstract

Alkaline earth borates, e.g. of calcium, barium or strontium or of magnesium, are added to compositions comprising crystalline alumina, e.g. corundum to act as fluxes in the subsequent firing. Boron oxide and a salt of the corresponding alkaline earth may be used instead of the preformed borate. Phosphates or silicates of alkaline earth metals and kaolin may also be incorporated. A solution of gum may be used as temporary binder, but where a fluid mixture for casting is desired a weak solution of aluminium chloride or hydrochloric acid may be used. After casting, the fluid mass is heated to below 100 DEG C. to cause immediate solidification. The final firing temperature is from 1300 to 1500 DEG C.
