Abstract
A refractory building-material, particularly for use as a mortar, contains olivine as its principal constituent together with a binding agent which forms a viscous glass in amount sufficient to bond the olivine at temperatures below that at which the olivine takes on its set, i.e. 275 to 1150 DEG C. The binding agent, which may range from about 20 to 25 per cent of the olivine, may be a single substance or a mixture, as of substances which bond in the cold, e.g. alkali silicate or aluminous cement, and substances which react with the cold binder to form the glass, e.g. a borate. The olivine may be in part replaced by chrome ore or deadburnt magnesite. A plasticizer such as gum arabic may be used. In an example the binding agent consists of colemanite, sodium silicate, clay and quartz. Other materials referred to are other boron compounds, artificial borates, boro-silicates or borophosphates and powdered glass.
