Abstract

524,214. Asbestos. LUDKE, W. Jan. 24, 1939. No. 2453. [Class 70] Artificial asbestos-like material is formed by heating a metal oxide-silica base having approximately the composition of asbestos but containing excess of sodium or calcium oxide with a fluorine compound and water to a temperature below the melting-point of the base, preferably under pressure. The fluorine compound may be added by treating the base with fluorine, hydrofluoric acid, silicon fluoride, organic fluorides or by addition of silicofluorides or other fluorides such as platinum, manganese or ammonium fluorides. If heated under pressure temperatures of 250‹C. upwards, and if without pressure from 700-1000‹C. are suitable. The metal oxide may be supplied by the use of compounds such as hydroxides, carbonates, bicarbonates, chlorides, oxalates, nitrates, fluorides &c. or of the metals, and silica may be used in the form of silica gel, waterglass, kieselguhr, glasses, ceramic masses, or natural rocks such as magnesite, olevine, greenstone, sand or clay. The mixture may be granulated by rolling it into flakes or by adding sawdust or other material which is burnt out or a granulated water-containing silica gel which contracts during the heating. The mixture may be submitted to a second heating after additions to make up the original content of fluorine, water and sodium oxide.
